About the Author
Busser Howell is a professional, working artist living in New York City. His paintings have been exhibited in California, New Mexico, Ohio, Florida, and New York as well as Spain, Italy, and Canada and have had museum exhibitions at the Morgan Museum in Lexington, Kentucky, Museum of the Permian Basin in Texas, the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, Connecticut, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian. At the age of fifteen Howell lost over 98 percent of his vision and at the age of forty lost the remainder of his sight. Even with his limited sight, however, he was a partner and worked twenty-four years in an interior design and restoration business while continuing to paint and exhibit his ever-evolving works. After getting involved with access programs in New York City, he began to write about himself and other blind and low vision artists in order to get the voice of the blind art community heard.

Art and Neuroscience

20/20 Blindsight is an amazing insight to the world of "seeing" as written by a blind artist. It reveals how creativity and perception occur not only with the author but led him to interviewing 15 worldwide artists with low-vision or without vision. However, they "see" more than those with sight at times! I also love it as there are photographs of these artists work which boggle the mind! Being curious about "how" we think also opens a wide space to a metaphysical rather than a scientific conclusion of how the brain works. Neuroscience is interesting but perhaps has a long way to go to find the source outside of the brain. So anyone interested in the way these artists use their muses will love this book. It is a fascinating read and could provoke conversations about art even in the world of museums worldwide. AMAZING!!!!!

A Wonderful Exploration of the Human Minds Eye

Busser Howell's book 20/20 Blindsight is an amazingly written and easy to read exploration of legally blind and totally blind artists. The reader can read only the interviews or the narrative and learn so much about blind artists. The stories are interesting and are at the cornerstone of art and the human mind. I enjoyed this book immensely! The journey that Howell takes, through his early years of low vision, through his current work, can inspire other blind artists to keep working. Just because your blind, doesn't mean you can't paint, do sculpture, or any type of art form. I highly recommend this great read!

After reading Busser Howell's book 20/20 Blindsight I have gained a better understanding of the dynamics of the men and women who make up the artists in the low-vision and blind community. As a Doctor serving the public, his writing and interviews have allowed me to SEE more clearly that to rely on only one sense shackles the mind of creativity,perception, touch , and accessibility. As a man who has vision I recognize through Busser how visually challenged I've been. This should be required reading for life's challenges.
