Canright's two books on Adventism are quite informative, coming from a an eye witness of the daily realities of early Adventism.Canright was a minister in the SDA Church, and a one time friend of Ellen White, the Adventist prophet, who is the subject of this book. Every Adventist should look carefully at Canright's arguments against Adventism and the prophetic claims of Ellen White. I have and believe that the arguments that Canright presents are for the most part accurate and conclusive.

I bought this book thinking it was the life story of Ellen G. White and it was a bashing of her instead. My fault, I sent it to my sister in Florida and did not get to see it first. My sister called and asked if I had made a mistake or what. Long story short, it was not what I wanted.

This book contains the pithy biographies of some forty senior officers who served Wellington, in the majority of cases, so ably during this six year war. Many had experience of battle prior to the Peninsular and went on to greater heights thereafter. There is a section summarizing the major engagements that this 'band of brothers' took part in.

The book is arranged in alphabetical order and each thoroughly researched entry places its subject's life in his historical and political context. The result is a highly entertaining, informative and authoritative book.

A companion piece to the author's Nelson's Trafalgar Captains and Their Battles, Wellington's Peninsular War Generals & Their Battles covers the lives of forty-one of the best known divisional commanders, heads of supporting arms and services (i.e. artillery, cavalry and supply), and principal staff officers of Wellington's Army in Spain from 1808 to 1812.
The book is divided into two distinct sections, the first consisting of the biographies conveniently arranged alphabetically, and the second consisting of the battles these men fought in, arranged chronologically, beginning with the Low Countries in 1793 and ending with Waterloo in 1815. At the end of each battle entry is a list of generals in the book who participated in each. There is an Introduction wherein the author discusses the promotion system, the purchase of commissions and the importance of patronage in Georgian England.
As any reputation would pale when next to Wellington's (not to mention his own low opinion of practically everybody), a close look at these men and their careers reveals extensive active service both before and often after the war against Napoleon. Also revelatory are the facts that most of them came from or married into titled families; almost half of them were of Scottish descent; and two were Germans.
All in all, this book is informative, well written and an essential reference tool for those interested in the period.

I also really enjoyed that this book was not written in a traditional ...

Full disclosure. James Gehris is my father and his career in the science and application of maintenance practices rubbed off a lot on me as a child. My father was always teaching me to fix things which translated into me being a tinkerer and a curious man to this day. I know about as much about RCM as a monkey knows about football. However, after reading about half way through this book I have found the concepts in it interesting and able to be transferred into every day situations without much imagination. The concepts of identifying a system, identifying a problem, implementing a practice to fix or ultimately avoid the problem can help in most aspects of daily life. I also really enjoyed that this book was not written in a traditional academic style. I can almost hear my his voice as I am reading and his sarcasm and charm come through in many parts. I will leave it to the experts as to whether this book is the end all, be all of RCM but I think the common sense which is so heavy in this book can go a long way towards making the human species as a whole a bit less stupid.

If you practice RCM, this book should be mandatory. If you are a company or government entity looking to hire an RCM practitioner to complete an RCM analysis, this book will give you a better understanding of what RCM can do if properly applied (beware of alleged practitioners) I have been involved in maintenance (mainly automotive repair) for the last 20 years and have been attempting to learn how to become a practitioner of RCM for about 1 year (you cannot do this with a single class). James Gehris' book is well written and explains the theory of what RCM is in a way I have not heard of before and it comes from a man who has decades of real world experience. His book, explains the traditional thought process of RCM, how it has evolved over the years, and how he has applied it, along with mistakes he has seen some make over the years. The book is a MUST if you believe you are an RCM practitioner or are looking to get into applying the theory of RCM. In my mind this should be a mandatory read for everyone using RCM. Thanks for the great book.

An outstanding book for either the practitioner and academic

Most books on maintenance, including Reliability Centered Maintenance, are penned by academics - many of whom have never been responsible for (or even involved with) the complexities of maintenance in the real world. The book by James Gehris, however, has been written by someone who has actual experience in the real world as well as an appreciation of maintenance theory. This is a book that anyone either directly involved with or teaching RCM really should read.

Heather Brooke wrote a tour de force

Full disclosure: Heather Brooke is a hero of mine. I even bought her roses... twice.

That said, I read "The Revolution Will Be Digitised" and was enthralled with how Heather Brooke exposed more than just WikiLeaks and Julian Assange's immoral conduct, but also the information mining that's going on. From the Obama Campaign working with data brokers to the surveillance state growing around us in the name of "national security".

Heather Brooke also writes a lot about the information war or how, "Citizens around the world have long declared a desire to be trusted with the formation of their own opinions, and that can only come when they have access to the facts. This is the essence of the information war. Do we trust citizens to communicate freely and come to their own conclusions, or do we believe those in authority have a right to restrict and manipulate what we know?"

Certainly a thought-provoking tome.

Didn't Finish

The subject matter of this book is certainly interesting. However, it has been let down by the author's choice of writing style. While it is not my preference, I don't mind the occasional non-fiction book written in story format. My problem with this book is that the format is inconsistent, switching between narrative and story and back again without warning. I was too annoyed to finish the book. Perhaps somebody else will like it better.
