Ambientado no Rio de Janeiro do Segundo Império, se inicia com um episódio que seria recente em que o narrador recebe a alcunha de "Dom Casmurro", daí o título do romance. Machado de Assis o escreveu utilizando ferramentas literárias como a ironia e uma intertextualidade que alcança Schopenhauer e sobretudo a peça Otelo de Shakespeare.
Ao longo dos anos, Dom Casmurro, com seus temas como o ciúme, a ambiguidade de Capitu, o retrato moral da época e o caráter do narrador, recebeu inúmeros estudos, adaptações para outras mídias e sofreu inúmeras interpretações, desde psicológicas e psicanalíticas na crítica literária dos anos 30 e dos anos 40, passando pelo feminismo na década de 1970 até sociológicas da década de 1980, e adiante. Creditado como um precursor do Modernismo e de idéias posteriormente escritas por Sigmund Freud, o livro influenciou os escritores John Barth, Graciliano Ramos e Dalton Trevisan e é considerado por alguns a obra-prima de Machado. Além de ter sido traduzido para outras línguas, continua a ser um de seus livros mais famosos e é considerado um dos mais fundamentais de toda a literatura brasileira.

Fundamentals of Arabic

The question is, do you want to learn Arabic, or do you want to sound like you speak a bit of Arabic? Having started Arabic with this book, I will admit that at times it seems rather harsh and dry. However, I truly believe that no native-English speaker can get to an intermediate, much less advanced, level of Arabic without having a solid grasp of the grammar and structure - which is pretty tough for just about every beginner. From watching my current classmates who started on al-Kitaab struggle through the upper levels and beg for more grammar reviews, I'm convinced the "Orange Book" is the best foundation out there. A good teacher can make anything fun.

useful, but boring

the second part of EMSA inherits the problems of the first part - it is unbelivably boring. the reading texts are a bit more diverse, probably because the level of students is higher. but still, some of them are just plain stupid - my vote would go to unit 35, where the highlight of the visit to jerusalem is the fact that the friend's wife made some dinner and they drank arabic coffee. what IS arabic coffee anyway? plus, the texts are all edited, which is a bit discouraging for the students, I think. the grammar part is a lot more useful - if you don't mind the choice of examples. I used the book a lot as a reference when I was an intermediate student and found it very helpful. so the stars given are for the grammar parts and not the rest - especially not the layout. I would only recommend this book if you have some serious gaps in your arabic that you need to close (and quickly), or use it as a reference. you can, then, use it on your own, even though it doesn't have the key to the exercises. but as a complete introductory course better find something that has authentic materials - you'll enjoy it so much more.

Okay for the Classroom

For a long time, Abboud and McCarus was the only game in town if you wanted to learn Arabic. Virtually every college course in Arabic used it throughout the USA.
Now the picture is different. Arabic studies are not the arcane field they once were, and there is a great variety of material out there. Still, this set has its virtues. It has a lot of drill material, and while this can be a bore, it is a godsend in the final analysis if you really want to learn literary Arabic.
The abundance of material makes it difficult to use as a self-teacher, however, and its better not used for that. Also, the print (done with an Arabic typewriter) is hard to read. My advise to the student is to start off with another course, and then switch to this series of readers when you've reached the intermediate stage.

As such, Studio Studies responds to three contemporary concerns in social and cultural thought: first, how to account for the situated nature of creative and cultural production; second, the challenge of reimagining creativity as a socio-materially distributed practice rather than the cognitive privilege of the individual; and finally, to unravel the parallels, contrasts and interconnections between studios and other sites of cultural-aesthetic and technoscientific production, notably laboratories. By enquiring into the operations, topologies and displacements that shape and format studios, this volume aims to demarcate a novel and important object of analysis for empirical social and cultural research as well to develop new conceptual repertoires to unpack the multiple ways studio processes shape our everyday lives.

About the Author

Ignacio Farías is a sociologist and an Assistant Professor of the Munich Center for Technology in Society and the Faculty of Architecture at the Technische Universität München. Ignacio works on science and technology studies, urban studies and cultural sociology with a focus on infrastructural transitions and participation. He is co-editor of Urban Assemblages. How Actor-Network Theory Changes Urban Studies (Routledge 2009) and Urban Cosmpolitics. Agencements, Assemblies, Atmospheres (Routledge, Forthcoming).

Alex Wilkie is a Senior Lecturer in Design and a sociologist. He leads both the MA: Interaction Design programme and the Ph.D. programme in Design Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. Alex works on user studies, design, HCI, inventive methods, practice-based research, process theory and science and technology studies. He is co-editor of Inventing the Social (Mattering Press, Forthcoming) and Transversal Speculations (Forthcoming) and is currently preparing a monograph for MIT Press.

Good book for a start....

Let me first start by saying there is no book by any publisher that is going to prepare you 100% for all the minutiae that are the MS exams. I just passed my 70-412 and there were two answer banks (multiple choice of same scenario but asking for different outcomes) straight from the 70-411 (as an example).

These books are very useful for getting you ~85% ready. You will still need hands on, labs (Microsoft Virtual Academy), technet, practice tests, forums etc....

Also MS currently released, for $200, an exam pack that gives you 4 cracks at the exam. Spend another $50 over the normal exam price. Take your exam, hope you pass the first time. BUT if you don't here is how I go about it:

My first time taking any exam is with the full knowledge that no matter how much book, technet articles, virtual labs you take there will always be something there that you didn't cover.

I go through the exam, answer what I am confident of, mark for review the items I'm going to go back and take more time on and finally when I'm at the point of being done and I have another 45 minutes I keep cycling through the questions, answer banks of multiple choice, scenario based questions and commit it to short term memory. Soon as I'm out the door I'm on my phone recording my mental notes.

Go study that stuff. Rinse repeat.

Like many other seasoned Windows Server Guys I've specialized. I've never missed a question regarding Storage Spaces, iSCSI, SOFS, Hyper-V, AD Sites, Replication, DFS. I'm solid on GPO's but I try to spend as little time there as possible :-)

I don't do AD RMS, FRS, NAP to name a few. Just not in my wheelhouse and other Dev-Admins handle that.

Then there are items like DC isolation and Managed DNS integration that will never appear on the tests that I have down cold.

Desparately needing a competent editor - many, many errors.

This book was required for a course I took at Pierce College, otherwise I would not have wasted my money on it. For a text that is over two years from original publication date the number of errata is saddening. It is as if the publisher simply merged several different drafts of the text into a final document and then sent it directly to the presses without any proof-reading whatsoever. The text explaining each server role/feature is often muddled and incomplete. The bright-point is that the step-by-step instructions are 99% correct.

Also, based on information provided by the publisher, you would think that purchasing a new copy of this book would include a MOAC Access Code for the online lab portion of the course. IT DOES NOT! The only way to obtain MOAC Access Codes is to purchase them directly from Wiley (or perhaps at your college bookstore).

Unless you need this text for a class, don't waste your money, you'll most likely have better understanding of the concepts and processes by searching the Internet for information.

YES! Just what we need.

I have been an avid amazon user/reader for years, and this is only my second review. I met Mr. Albert at a conference this winter. I hadn't heard his name before the conference. I attended 3 or 4 of his talks that week. I loved to hear him speak. The context and conveyance grabbed me and kept me captivated and wanting to learn more. I can't really point out the best topics of this book, because there are too many to cover. He tells the raw truth about schools, learning, and life. Reading this book is very much like hearing him speak. Yes, it is a book/writing style that is sort of all over the place, but that's the wonderful thing- its like having a conversation, and listening to his magical storytelling. My only regret is not posting a review sooner. I was surprised to see there have been no reviews until mine. Since meeting Mr. Albert this past February, I can attest my life and the quality of my family life has changed for the better. The author is a great man, with great stories, and great ideas that make you feel great, and inspired! This book will surely be lent out to friends, then shelved next to Holt and Gatto to refer to often for reassurance and inspiration.

Trenchant, Wise, and Inspiring

David Albert will certainly go down as one of a handful of early homeschooling pioneers in America. His books - and I've read ALL of them - keep getting better and better. I would say that "Dismantling the Inner School" will go down as his magnum opus....but I fully expect him to bless us with a few more!

I love David Albert, and was thrilled to find this book. He goes more into the whys of unschooling in this one, and explains why schooling is bad for all of society. It's a great boost for going against the grain.

Reading is a chore, but the information is surprising.

This book is intriguing only because of the subject. The text is pretty much a chore to read, and the maps are not very useful. The fact that there were Muslims in the Baltic region is contrary to the prevailing view that Islam is a matter of very recent immigration and is an intrusive presence in Europe.

There have been Muslims in the region since the 14th century when there was a population of Muslim Tatars in what was then Poland-Lithuania (which was for a time, the largest European state). Apparently some descendants are still there.

I cannot recommend this book except for the information, which for some readers may make the chore of slogging through it. worthwhile.
