About the Author
Cecil Scott "C.S." Forester was the pen name of Cecil Louis Troughton Smith (27 August 1899 - 2 April 1966), an English novelist who rose to fame with tales of naval warfare. His most notable works were the 12-book Horatio Hornblower series, depicting a Royal Navy officer during the Napoleonic era, and "The African Queen" (1935; filmed in 1951 by John Huston). His novels "A Ship of the Line" and "Flying Colours" were jointly awarded the 1938 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction.

Start with this one.

If you're new to the Hornblower series, start with this one. Then read Ship of the Line, then Flying Colors. The three are practically a triptych, whereas the others all feel like they have space between them. Also, since Forester actually wrote Beat To Quarters first, there's in 'introductory' quality to it that no other book in the series has. The series compares favorably with the Aubrey/Maturin series I think. Odd that they were both cut short by the deaths of their respective authors.
In short, start with this and the next two as a trilogy, then proceed in any order you want.

I ignored an actual battle to read this...

...or, to be more precise, I sat within yards of a major Civil War re-enactment so engrossed in this book that I managed to ignore artillery and musket fire. I am a big fan of the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian, but previously looked down my nose at Hornblower, I think because I knew it solely from TV and movies. This book never slows down for a minute--not just battles but ship repair and revictualling seem gripping in the hands of Forester.
Based on the films, I was not expecting Hornblower to show much internal life--he always seems to be superhuman on screen, but in the book he must struggle with his softer nature to develop his imperious style. Likewise I expected nothing interesting in the way of female characters, but it was a happy surprise to find Lady Barbara Wellesley on board ship.
If you will forgive a few O'Brian/Forrester comparisons: O'Brian is funnier. Forrester's battle scenes are a bit easier for me to follow. Hornblower is a more interesting or at least complex character than Aubrey, but O'Brian has the advantage of Maturin, who not only adds character but allows for dialogue rather than the perennial internal monologues Hornblower has with himself because he has no one of rank to talk to.
I hope that more seasoned readers of the series will agree with this appeal to newer readers: Even if you have read neither author, this book is a good place to start.

In my opinion the best Hornblower book written.

I first read BEAT TO QUARTERS when I borrowed it from a public library in 1940. It is now 1998 and the third copy of the book is in my book case, the other two copies, being paper-backs, having been read until worn out.
I might add that, in my opinion, any aspiring writer would do well to read Forester, not to copy his style, but to realise that any good author can entertain, but only the great can enthrall; and only the greatest can make you "see" a character (even a minor one) in only two short lines of print.
His death robbed the reading world of one of its most readable authors.

Before embarking on the epochal New Frontier, Cooke wrote and drew several Batman stories, notably Ego, Cooke's first published comics story other than one apprentice effort. It remains a stunning debut, a psychologically loaded tale in which Bruce Wayne confronts his innermost fears in the form of a grotesque embodiment of his costumed alter ego. Even this early in his career, Cooke's striking style, made up of dynamically simple drawings, cinematic compositions, and noirish lighting effects, is fully formed. Besides Ego and a handful of shorter stories featuring the Caped Crusader, this collection includes the Catwoman graphic novel Selina's Big Score (2003), in which that villainess attempts a final heist before her reinvention as a vigilante defending the downtrodden. Its presence here might be questioned, for nowhere is Batman to be found in it, yet it's so impressive—the high-water mark of Cooke's pre–New Frontier career—that it's petty to quibble. This is Why People Read Batman!

This hardcover collect two excellent graphic novels by Darwyn Cooke, Batman: Ego and Catwoman: Selina's Big Score, as well as some short stories also by Mr. Cooke.
Batman:Ego was published in 2000 as a 64 page graphic novel, but finally gets the hardcover treatment it deserves, while the Catwoman tale, which was an original hardcover, crops up again in the same format. Both tales feature fast paced writing coupled with a fantastic art style which harkens back to Batman the Animated series (for which Darwin was one of the designers) but with more of a noirish edge, so don't let the streamlined style fool you into thinking these stories are for all ages or too soft. If you liked Mr. Cooke's recent work on the Spirit, this is better. Much better.
Some other reviewers on this page commented that this book was a little dissapointing due to the inclusion of a story which does not feature Batman, but don't be dissuaded from picking this one up. Selina's Big Score features one of Batman's oldest villians in one of her greatest appearances, so don't miss out. Give it a chance, then read the collections of Catwoman comics by Ed Brubaker, Cooke and Cameron Stewart, which are some of the best crime comics around.
Fans of Richard Stark's Parker will recognize a Parker like Character, named Stark, a heister who helps Catwoman pull of the titular big score which is just as hard nosed (and fun) as any written by Richard Stark during the 60s and 70s. This will serve as a primer to Darwyn's upcoming adaptations of the first four Parker novels, beginning next year.
This hardcover is also special because it does not feature the ugly spine design which appears on many of the current DC hardcovers where a DC logo appears at the bottom of the spine in a blue back ground, ruining a book's appearance on the book shelf.
Don't miss out on one of the best written and drawn set of Batman stories of the last 20 years; right up there with the Batman classics of the 80s like Year One, DKR and the Killing Joke, at least in my opinion.

I have worked with young special needs children using TAAP for 3 years. Students were able to sustain attention to activities, attend to teacher s structured activities and gain academic skills needed to succeed in the academic curriculum. Debra Widmer-Reyes, MPT attended University of Southern California. She graduated with two degrees, Psychology, AB-1977 and Physical Therapy, MS-1978. Physical Therapy internship study during Year I-1977 was in neurology and pediatrics at Rancho los Amigos Hospital-Downey, California, sports medicine and orthopedics at Southwestern Medical Orthopedic Group-Inglewood, California and school based Physical Therapy at Children Health Services, Los Angeles, California. Internships during Year II-1978 were Adult Rehabilitation at Northridge Hospital, Northridge, California, Pediatric Surgery and Out-patient services at San Diego Children s Hospital, San Diego, California and Pediatric/Adult Arthritis and Collagen Disorders at the Robert Breck Brigham Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. As a student athlete at USC, Debra experienced training effects of visual motor training to enhance performance. The immediate improvements and lasting effects of visual-gross motor training and visualization planning on sport performance became a passionate interest as she studied Physical Therapy. Debra s interest in this area continued to grow in the specialized study and certification in pediatric treatment techniques: Ayers Sensory Integration and Neuro Developmental Treatment Approach. Throughout the years, Debra has combined visual training techniques in sports performance with pediatric techniques to develop TAAP. Her work experience was initially at Newington Children s Hospital. From Newington, Debra owned a private practice for 16 years servicing children in the school setting and at home. During this time, one of her contracts was Stonington Public Schools, Stonington, Connecticut and in 1996, she became a full time employee. Currently, her school system supports TAAP in each building: 3 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 1 high school. The 6 Rehabilitation treadmills are in constant motion throughout the school day providing opportunities to increase visual gross motor performance to increase independent learning. In addition to PT, Debra has professionally coached High School Sports over 20 years as an Assistant and Head Coach in the sports of Volleyball and Track and Field. All of her concerns as a PT and coach are with efficacy of training enhancing performance through specific visual-gross motor training.

There are 11 chapters in the book with each chapter written by people who knew Neerja and have related big and small incidents and delightful experiences they had with her. Six of her school and college mates – Vrinda, Sunita, Eli, Naomi, Jabeen and Shantala – have written a chapter each. Wendy, who was her Trainer at Pan Am and gave her anti-hijack training. Dharmendra Shah, who was a passenger on the plane and survived the hijack, Akhil Bhanot, my brother and of course Neerja’s brother, Atul Kasbekar who has produced the film Neerja, have all written a chapter each. One chapter is basically an article written by my father, Harish Bhanot, in the Hindustan times in 1986.”

She is my hero

I saw the film couple nights ago and read the book today. What an inspiration Neerja is. I salute her bravery and courage. Pan Am chief is right: that's not taught. And as her friends and colleagues wrote in this book her uncompromising principles were a part of her throughout. Neerja I never knew you but I know you now.

I think it's a great book. It definitely gives readers a opportunity to get to know Neerja more. Her many human qualities , kindness and love for humanity. It is so sad that she lost her life at such a young age, but she is an amazing inspiration to all. I highly recommend this book to anyone.
