Pretty interesting read. Storyline was fast paced, entertaining, sweet and hot. Due to age, distance and a minor secret, Chad and Lana spent years apart without knowing the love they shared for each other. Not to say their relationship was a bed of roses and didn't have a few bumps along the way. They have steamy chemistry and interaction. Overall an enjoyable second chance book.

Hazel Gower really hit this one out of the park. I usually read Paranormal romance and this story kept me interested from start to finish. I have read other books from this author and this is one of the best stories that I have read. I hope there is more books in this series to come. Thank you for the good read and I wish for more.

The Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland (1577, 1587), issued under the name of Raphael Holinshed, was the crowning achievement of Tudor historiography, and became the principal source for the historical writings of Spenser, Daniel and, above all, Shakespeare. Bringing together leading specialists in a variety of fields - literature, history, religion, classics, bibliography, and the history of the book - the Handbook demonstrates that the Chronicles powerfully reflect the nature of Tudor thinking about the past, about politics and society, and about the literary and rhetorical means by which readers might be persuaded of the truth of narrative. The volume shows how distinctive it was for one book to chronicle the history of three nations of the British archipelago.

The various sections of the Handbook analyze the making of the two editions of the Chronicles; the relationship of the work to medieval and early modern historiography; its formal properties, genres and audience; attitudes to politics, religion, and society; literary appropriations; and the parallel descriptions and histories of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. The result is a seminal study that shows unequivocally the vitality and complexity of the chronicle form in the late sixteenth century.

About the Author

Paulina Kewes is Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Jesus College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Her research interests focus on early modern drama, politics, and historiography. She is the author of Authorship and Appropriation: Writing for the Stage in England, 1660-1710 (1998) and 'That Great Matter of Succession' and Elizabethan Political Culture (2012) and, editor or co-editor of Plagiarism in Early Modern England (2003), The Uses of History in Early Modern England (2006), and The Question of Succession in Late Elizabethan England (2013).

Ian W. Archer has been Fellow and Tutor in History at Keble College, Oxford since 1991. His primary research interests lie in the history of early modern London, and he has also published on history and memory. He is a Literary Director of the Royal Historical Society.

Felicity Heal is an Emeritus Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford. Her research interests lie in the religious history of Britain and Ireland during the Reformation, in the social history of the gentry, and in gift giving and reciprocity in early modern England. She has written extensively on all these subjects. She is consultant editor for the sixteenth-century section of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

Incredible In Depth Study of Overlooked Classic

Many have heard of Holinshed's Chronicles but few have actually read any portion of them. They are best known as the sources for many of Shakespeare's plays, however they have rarely been studied in their own right. Through both this book and their website of The Holinshed Project, the editors from Oxford have brought this incredible work to light for the first time in centuries, making it clear that they should be studied in their own right by students of literature, history and historiography. Although the book is expensive, it is worth it for the serious scholar. More casual students may want to try first the Holinshed Project website, which contains the full text of both original versions of Holinshed's Chronicles (1577 and 1587) along with some representative "Working Papers" from the handbook. Try especially Paulina Kewes' "Narrative Historiography and the Rules of Succession" which completely changes the perspective on Elizabethan views of political issues (divine right of kings, etc.).

Interesting story; tantalizing backstory

Richard Bassett's "Hitler's Spy Chief: The Wilhelm Canaris Betrayal: The Intelligence Campaign Against Adolf Hitler" is a well-written and tantalizing survey of the life of Wilhelm Canaris, the head of German Military Intelligence (the "Abwehr") from 1935 to 1944. Although Bassett cautions against making Canaris a saint - and that caution is obviously well-taken since Canaris wasn't a saint - Canaris comes out of the pages of Bassett's book as an honorable and admirable figure.

Briefly, Canaris started out during the early years of Hitler as a Nazi - at least in the sense of an anti-Bolshevik, German patriot who wanted to see Germany returned to its ante bellum role in the world - but after a surprisingly short period of exposure to Hitler and his coterie, Canaris realized that the Nazis were uncivilized barbarians who would bring ruin to Germany. According too Basset, we can discern from Canaris' activities a two-track policy: the first being to help Germany win the war and the second being to blunt the barbarities of Nazi rule. As to the first, Canaris ran an effective intelligence operation that thoroughly compromised British intelligence. As to the second, Canaris gave orders to the Abwehr that it was not to be involved in atrocities.

Bassett details how Canaris was also the background figure in various plots by German generals to arrest or depose Hitler. The earliest of these plots was actually derailed by Chamberlain's surprise trip to Munich, which allowed Hitler to avoid the necessity of conquering Czechoslovakia, the initiation of which was the pre-set signal for the arrest of Hitler. Canaris was also involved in the von Stauffenberg plot, the failure of which led to the cashiering of Canaris and the roll-up of the Abwehr into the SD. Eventually, it also led to the arrest of Canaris, the discovery of his records, which included records of Nazi atrocities, and his execution days before the German capitulation in May of 1945.

Bassett also describes how Canaris opened lines of communications with British intelligence by which he attempted to co-ordinate a coup against Hitler with peace with the West. These lines of communications ran through Spain, Switzerland, Sweden and the Vatican. Ultimately, British intelligence was unwilling to believe in the idea of "the Good German" - an attitude fostered in part by Kim Philby working in the counter-intelligence division of British intelligence.

Bassett also claims that at some point Canaris became a de facto British agent in working against Hitler, such as by briefing Franco on arguments that he could use to keep Hitler from enlisting Spain in a joint operation to seize Gibraltar and by "sexing up" the intelligence on British military strength in 1940 in order to delay Operation Sea Lion. For its part, it was amusing to note that the British provided Canaris with details of Soviet military strength in order to induce Germany to head East.

Canaris' life is obviously fascinating. What is equally fascinating is how Canaris figures in the backstory of so many history books that I've read, although he is never mentioned in those stories. For example, as noted above, Kim Philby's entre into the career that would lead him to becoming the highest placed Soviet mole in British intelligence intertwined with that of Canaris; both were active in Spain during the Spanish Civil War, Philby reported on Canaris' actions to his Soviet masters, and Philby made himself invaluable to the Soviets by working to prevent any German-Western rapproachment.

Likewise, in The Lost History of 1914: Reconsidering the Year the Great War Began, the chapter on Mexico mentions the escape of the Mexican dictator Huerta on the German cruiser Dresden at least three times. It just happens to be the case that the young intelligence officer on the Dresden was Canaris.

Similarly, the assassination of Heydrich plays a not insignificant role in Peter Longerich's Heinrich Himmler: A Life, which according to Bassett may have been motivated by a British desire to protect the continuing viability of Canaris. Admittedly, Longerich's failure to mention this possible connection is appropriate given the speculative, inference-on-inference nature of the claim, which makes this observation pertinent: a lot of Bassett's "gosh-wow" insights are by their nature speculation. They may be valid speculations for all we know - why was Heydrich assassinated but not other provincial governors? And why the timing and disregard for the consequences in Czechoslovakia? - but we are never going to know the answer. The reader should take Bassett's arguments with a something of a grain of salt and not drink too deeply of the Kool-aid.

Nonetheless, it's interesting that the eminence grise in the backstory of this event described in Longerich's massive work on Himmler may have been Canaris.

Finally, in his execrable book Hitler's Pope: The Secret History of Pius XII, John Cornwell mentions that Pius XII showed great courage in relaying information about possible German military coups against Hitler. It is probably another example of Cornwell's shoddy scholarship and lack of curiosity about anything other than the axe he grinds against Pius XII, but Cornwell doesn't mention that it was Canaris and the Abwehr that was using Pius XII as a "line of communication to British intelligence. Incidentally, Bassett has a simple answer to the deep mystery of Pius' purported "silence"; Pius was preserving his institutional neutrality and authority in order to play the traditional role of mediator in order to bring the war to an earlier conclusion with a concommitant reduction in human suffering and death.

The absence of any mention of Canaris in these books may mean that, like a good spy chief, Canaris may have been manipulating the threads of history without leaving anything that would explicitly connect him to the record of these events.

Wonderful book

I only would like a small detail that perhaps Richard Bassett do not know.

The other day I was ready the memoirs of Vittorio Mussolini, a book he wrote while in exile in Buenos Aires which was printed in Italy in 1952. Vittorio MUssolini was the elder son's of il Duce.

He mention that while in Munich with his father, at the end of 1943, after the liberation of Mussolini by Skorzeny, he asked his father why Germany did not invaded Great Britain in 1940.
The answer of his father was that he was discussing the same point with Hitler a few days earlier and Hitler told him that it was due to a mistake made by Canais about the real strengh of the British Army. He gave him a report showing their strenght 3 times higher of what was in reality. Because of that he did cancel the operation Sea Lion, which knowing now the truth was certian he would have suceeded.
It seems that not only Spain should built a statue to Canaris, but also Great Britain.

What might have been?

Not since Anthony Cave Brown wrote "Bodyguard of Lies" has there been a really thorough discussion about the role of Wilhelm Canaris in the shadow war against Hitler. Bassett brings a lot of recently-available detail to this book and draws some interesting conclusions. To his credit, he also admits that some aspects of the life of this fascinating character will never be unraveled. The writing style is sometimes a bit choppy but it moves quickly. Had Canaris succeeded in his plans, had Neville Chamberlain been more visionary, had Kim Philby not interfered, the history of World War II would have been very different.

Excellent book on dampers

This is the best book ever written about shock absorbers. Although much have been written about dumpers in the other books, nowhere the dumpers have been covered so well as in this book, from design, construction, production, testing and using, to the analysis of ride-handling compromise. It covers the damper both as the unit per se, and as a small yet vital part of the whole complex vehicle system.

Please note that the information in this book is mostly academical and abstract. It servers educational purposes excellent, but has little practical value for a beginning racer or automotive enthusiast. The chapter about damper testing covers mostly laboratory tests on special machines. The chapter about fluid mechanics analyzes different damper fluid properties, without reference to any specific particular fluid compound. The chapter about valve design lists various valve types, characteristics and various theoretical models of valves. The chapter about adjustable damper enumerates the purposes of adjustment, classifies the dampers by the ease of adjustment, and gives different adjustable valve types. Having great theoretical value, the book however gives no advice for those people who would like to modify a damper manually by installing different kinds of valves, using another liquid, etc.

Millikens in their wonderful volume "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics" have devoted 40 pages to dampers, but almost all on vehicle behavior, rather than damper design itself. "The Shock Absorber Handbook" reveals the problem of passenger comfort better than the Millikens' work. However, both of the books have similar style, both have hundreds of formulas and illustrations. I highly recommend it to anybody interested in the theory of vehicle dynamics.

The Shock Absorber Handbook is a good work, providing hundreds of formulas for computing load-dampening responses. Somewhat overly detailed on advanced theories,with strong references to hi-performance applications. It is the book you picture as a classic textbook for a college-level shock-design course. Chapter 1 gives a good basis in the history of the hydraulic dampener, from the initial start of friction snubbers to today's performance units. A good book to add to any shock design engineer's library.

The Bible of dampers

At first view the book seems like a dissapointment. Numerous equations, most of them rather complex. You feel that this is basically an academic book and has nothing to do with real and practical knowledge. But as you go deeper into the book you will soon realize that the content is going to be very helpful in a practical point of view.

The book starts with pure vibration theory. Don't even think that this is sonething to ignore as it is so important to know the basic aspects of vibraton theory in order to go deep in damper knowledge. You will find many important and interesting things for the real world, like transmissibility of the suspension, damping coefficient, damping ratio, damping factor and more. Also at Section 2.8 series stiffness is being discussed which is an extremely interesting subject in a practical point of view.

Chapter 3 is maybe the most important chapter of the book describing in depth the theoryof vehicle vibrations, ride, handling and most importantly you will learn a lot about ride handling compromise.

Chapter 4 is about motion ratio, its effect in suspension behavior and also you will be so happy to be in a position to understand the basic differences in terms of geometry and behavior between double wishbones, mcpherson struts, rocker arm suspension, pushrod, pullrod and motorcycle forks and rear suspensions. Personally, i was excited to find out that in most cases there are not huge differences in behavior between a double wishbone and a strut suspension.

Chapter 5 is all about fluid dynamics but as the author also states, you must already have a level of knowledge on the topic in order to fully understand the stuff there.

Chapter 6 is about valve design, valve types, velve characteristics and valve models.

Chapter 7 will guide you through the damper behavior, it will talk about valve flow rates and the effect of these on damper behavior, damper parameters like damper symmetry and more.

Chapter 8 discusses about the adjustable dampers and the effects of the various adjustments in the damper behavior.

Chapter 9 will give you a guide on how to specify a damper

Chapter 10 is a very nice and practical chapter on damper testing.

If i have a single complaint about this book is that it would be 100% perfect in the case it contained some colour real pictures of various types of dampers, damper internal components, various types of valves, etc.

All in all, this is a book you cannot afford to lose if you are serious in dampers. I would like to see a more modern new edition though.

Perfect for me, and quite possibly, you...

I started playing at 15, put in many hundreds of hours on worthless, stumbling in the dark (pre-internet) "practice". I plateaued fairly quickly because I always tried to play WAY too fast and basically learned really well how to play sloppy, mistake-filled, unimaginative licks. I kept at it off and on for many years and then gave up about a decade ago.

Fast forward to about a month ago. Now, at 45, I decide I'm gonna give guitar another go. I started watching youtube videos, reading online lessons, etc, and I learned a couple things. One was that I need to practice S-L-O-W-E-R , but just as important, I need to learn the fretboard. That's where this book came in. It is EXACTLY what I was after. A concise, guitar oriented, method to learn my way around a fretboard, and at a price you can't beat. When you include the very tasty licks for all the 5 positions, and the authors excellent advice on how to incorporate the licks into your playing while making them your own, well, you've got yourself a steal of a deal in my opinion.

Thanks again to Mr. Alexander for the effort he put into this work. I am confident that now that I have the tools to do it right, I will stick with it this time.

When you have read as many reviews as I have , they get redundant, but I am going to give this a try.
I am 66 years old and just started a year ago to learn this wonderful instrument.
You can spend countless hours (as I have ) searching the internet for " AH HAA " moments.
This E-Book abounds with them.
The price, the content, the instructor, the audio training tracks available, free content at the authors web-site makes the investment in this book one of the best values available on the internet.

Very Helpful for Exploring the Caged System

This ebook provides a wealth of information about the caged guitar system. It provides diagrams of all the forms for chords and arpeggios, and gives ideas on how to apply it. Joseph also provides riff ideas for each form. I already knew a little about the caged system, but wanted more and found it here. You can hardly beat the price for all the insight here. You can also request a PDF after your purchase, which is quickly delivered. You can't go wrong if you're looking for more info in connection with the caged system.
