This book is jam-packed with practical and useful tips on adding just the right touches that take an event from being "good" to "totally outstanding". No matter the budget or type of event - there is something for everyone. I don't intend to plan any events without first consulting this book.

Good book although it is written like a textbook

I just graduated from college and am thinking of pursuing a career in Event Planning. I ordered this book to learn more about the subject only to find that it was another textbook! With that being said, it is a good book still. Some of the administrative information is pretty basic but I find the artistic design elements that are weaved throughout the text to be rather interesting. It is as good book to get acquainted with the industry, just expect it to be written like a textbook.

A story that can touch our soul and change our lives

I found this to be a very imaginative tale and beautifully illustrated. When I dove below the surface story I found a profound teaching from the Jewish and/or Kabbalistic tradition. Like so many teachings from the mystics, who are found in all the noble faiths, the story challenges us to see the path to heaven (enlightenment, etc.) in a paradoxical way - call upon those parts of ourselves that are the most wounded and hidden - and yet these can lead us to the heavenly goal. Madonna offers a tale that at once is intriguing, disturbing, inspiring and profound.

Lake Wobegone Days inspired me to write this book. I had wondered, "Why did Garrison Keillor have to invent Lake Wobegon, when Vernon was there all the time?"

The book has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. One older lady phoned to tell me how much she enjoyed it. I discovered later that the lady had not used the telephone for years, until she called me. Now I am hearing from people reading it for the second and third time.

Layman Strikes It Rich With Growing Up Rich

The one thing that struck me after finishing Growing Up Rich was the fact that maybe I had indeed grown up poor in the affluence of suburbia, never having experienced the sense of community or belonging found in small town life. This humorous account of growing up in Vernon Indiana is told through the eyes of a spunky, ageless girl named Carol Jeannette whose keen sense of observation brings to life the "rich" characters living there.

Carol Jeannette paints a refreshing portrait of the ordinariness as well as the peculiarities of the town's people, their deeply held values and simple way of life. Only a child would notice that Mrs. Trapp, the lady who runs the post office bears a remarkable resemblance to George Washington or think that the definition of a radius is best remembered by the town curmudgeon's cane, which formed an imaginary circle around him that children dared not enter.

From the tales of the German "goat man" and his wife who saved the lives of at least of three of the town's children, you get a feeling of inclusion that bridges ethnic differences and divisions and truly defines what it means to watch out for your neighbors. While the stories about "gentleman" Ben Henry and the "bicycle man" make you wonder if the Jim Crow laws of segregation and social mores of the time were somewhat blurred in the town of Vernon.

This tale of pre and post WWII Vernon is told with such honesty and clarity that the characters, "special places" and events spring to life, leaving the reader wanting to know more. Who of my generation raised in suburbia, could imagine setting up a movie screen in a nearby park and settling into a picnic-like atmosphere among neighbors to watch a film?

Growing Up Rich strikes at the heart of what is good about being human, from helping those who have less even when you don't have much, to forging lasting relationships with the people around you, some who are grouchy, some who are known liars and some who don't seem quick enough to know the difference. Simply put, this books is a must read for students of the human condition.

It is a spirited look at life that makes you laugh out loud, smile inside, and reflect upon your own childhood perceptions and experiences. Layman's examples of pre-television entertainment for children, like things to do with wildflowers or things to with other people's junk, make you want to get busy and introduce your children to some old-fashioned fun. While Growing Up Rich provides a vivid picture of life in a small Indiana town in the 1940s and 50s, it contribution is truly in it's ability to stimulate meaningful dialogue about what's really important in life and what it is that makes us rich or poor in America.

Great writing style, entertaining and informative - Buy IT!

This book exceeded my expectations! I sought it for historical information pursuant to researching my father's past. And, the book did indeed shed much light on his time in Vernon, IN. However, the author's age-contextual writing style was extraordinary and the book was genuinely entertaining.

I recommend it for anyone interested in reading about the "heart of America" for the years covered.

The use of economic and political tools to strengthen nations vulnerable to the spread of terrorist influence appears to receive less emphasis in the 2006 Strategy than in the 2003 version.
Inherent in the National Strategy are a number of issues for Congress. These include (1) democratization as a counterterrorism strategy; (2) the validity of the Strategy’ s assumptions about terrorists; (3) whether the Strategy adequately addresses the situation in Iraq including the U.S. presence there as a catalyst for international terrorism; (4) the Strategy’s effectiveness against rogue states; (5) the degree to which the Strategy addresses threats reflected in recent National Intelligence Estimates; (6) mitigating extremist indoctrination of the young; and (7) the efficacy of public diplomacy. To the degree that the 2006 National Strategy for Combating Terrorism may not adequately address the importance of these and other relevant factors, some adjustment of the strategy and its implementation may be warranted.

About the Author
Joel Karty earned his B.S. in chemistry at the University of Puget Sound and his Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry at Stanford University. He joined the faculty at Elon University in 2001, where he currently holds the rank of associate professor. He teaches primarily the organic chemistry sequence and also teaches general chemistry and physical chemistry. In the summers, Joel teaches at the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program through the Duke University medical center. His research interests include investigating the roles of resonance and inductive effects in fundamental chemical systems and studying the mechanism of pattern formation in Liesegang reactions. He has written a very successful student supplement, Get Ready for Organic Chemistry, Second Edition (formerly called The Nuts and Bolts of Organic Chemistry), published by Pearson.

This author teaches organic chemistry in the simplest way possible that seems easier than learning 2+2. He writes unlike other organic chemistry books that I've read and I learned quickly and efficiently from his book. He stresses the important elements of how to learn organic chemistry and it has helped me in both organic chemistry 1 and 2. The practice problems were super helpful because it helped me apply the concepts. You'll need this book if you are taking any organic chemistry classes in life.
