Good book for a start....

Let me first start by saying there is no book by any publisher that is going to prepare you 100% for all the minutiae that are the MS exams. I just passed my 70-412 and there were two answer banks (multiple choice of same scenario but asking for different outcomes) straight from the 70-411 (as an example).

These books are very useful for getting you ~85% ready. You will still need hands on, labs (Microsoft Virtual Academy), technet, practice tests, forums etc....

Also MS currently released, for $200, an exam pack that gives you 4 cracks at the exam. Spend another $50 over the normal exam price. Take your exam, hope you pass the first time. BUT if you don't here is how I go about it:

My first time taking any exam is with the full knowledge that no matter how much book, technet articles, virtual labs you take there will always be something there that you didn't cover.

I go through the exam, answer what I am confident of, mark for review the items I'm going to go back and take more time on and finally when I'm at the point of being done and I have another 45 minutes I keep cycling through the questions, answer banks of multiple choice, scenario based questions and commit it to short term memory. Soon as I'm out the door I'm on my phone recording my mental notes.

Go study that stuff. Rinse repeat.

Like many other seasoned Windows Server Guys I've specialized. I've never missed a question regarding Storage Spaces, iSCSI, SOFS, Hyper-V, AD Sites, Replication, DFS. I'm solid on GPO's but I try to spend as little time there as possible :-)

I don't do AD RMS, FRS, NAP to name a few. Just not in my wheelhouse and other Dev-Admins handle that.

Then there are items like DC isolation and Managed DNS integration that will never appear on the tests that I have down cold.

Desparately needing a competent editor - many, many errors.

This book was required for a course I took at Pierce College, otherwise I would not have wasted my money on it. For a text that is over two years from original publication date the number of errata is saddening. It is as if the publisher simply merged several different drafts of the text into a final document and then sent it directly to the presses without any proof-reading whatsoever. The text explaining each server role/feature is often muddled and incomplete. The bright-point is that the step-by-step instructions are 99% correct.

Also, based on information provided by the publisher, you would think that purchasing a new copy of this book would include a MOAC Access Code for the online lab portion of the course. IT DOES NOT! The only way to obtain MOAC Access Codes is to purchase them directly from Wiley (or perhaps at your college bookstore).

Unless you need this text for a class, don't waste your money, you'll most likely have better understanding of the concepts and processes by searching the Internet for information.

YES! Just what we need.

I have been an avid amazon user/reader for years, and this is only my second review. I met Mr. Albert at a conference this winter. I hadn't heard his name before the conference. I attended 3 or 4 of his talks that week. I loved to hear him speak. The context and conveyance grabbed me and kept me captivated and wanting to learn more. I can't really point out the best topics of this book, because there are too many to cover. He tells the raw truth about schools, learning, and life. Reading this book is very much like hearing him speak. Yes, it is a book/writing style that is sort of all over the place, but that's the wonderful thing- its like having a conversation, and listening to his magical storytelling. My only regret is not posting a review sooner. I was surprised to see there have been no reviews until mine. Since meeting Mr. Albert this past February, I can attest my life and the quality of my family life has changed for the better. The author is a great man, with great stories, and great ideas that make you feel great, and inspired! This book will surely be lent out to friends, then shelved next to Holt and Gatto to refer to often for reassurance and inspiration.

Trenchant, Wise, and Inspiring

David Albert will certainly go down as one of a handful of early homeschooling pioneers in America. His books - and I've read ALL of them - keep getting better and better. I would say that "Dismantling the Inner School" will go down as his magnum opus....but I fully expect him to bless us with a few more!

Great non-conformist book

I love David Albert, and was thrilled to find this book. He goes more into the whys of unschooling in this one, and explains why schooling is bad for all of society. It's a great boost for going against the grain.

In the first historical study of this important community, Harry Norris investigates the earliest contacts between the Baltic peoples and the world of Islam. He examines the trade routes of the Vikings and the early Slavs and Balts who had commercial relations with Arab merchants, trading in amber, furs, Middle Eastern silks and other luxury goods.
Norris surveys the Qipchaq Tatars' history, their Muslim faith, their culture, their literature and their life as indigenous Europeans in New Europe today. He draws contrasts and similarities between other Muslim communities in Europe, including the diverse immigrant Muslim groups in the Nordic countries that border the Baltic Sea: Finland, Sweden and Denmark. This book is of importance to those studying the rich cultural heritage of minority groups of European Muslims and their position in Europe today, as well as those interested in the study of migration.

About the Author
Harry Norris is Professor Emeritus of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of London. Before this he was Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at SOAS and an associate Fellow at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London.

Reading is a chore, but the information is surprising.

This book is intriguing only because of the subject. The text is pretty much a chore to read, and the maps are not very useful. The fact that there were Muslims in the Baltic region is contrary to the prevailing view that Islam is a matter of very recent immigration and is an intrusive presence in Europe.

There have been Muslims in the region since the 14th century when there was a population of Muslim Tatars in what was then Poland-Lithuania (which was for a time, the largest European state). Apparently some descendants are still there.

I cannot recommend this book except for the information, which for some readers may make the chore of slogging through it. worthwhile.
