Good vegetation descriptions, text sometimes confusing

Georgia is botanically an extremely interesting area in the South Caucasus, with well-preserved wetlands and temperate rainforests, steppes and high mountains.

The book describes all the vegetation types and communities of Georgia, their environmental conditions and principal species. Scientific names are used throughout the book. The taxonomy is somewhat “Russian”, i.e. many taxa, which are considered subspecies, varieties or even synonyms in the west, appear as distinct species, e.g. Quercus pedunculiflora (instead of Q. robur ssp. pedunculiflora), Pinus pityusa (P. brutia var. pityausa), Carpinus caucasica (C. betulus).

English is not always perfect but the text is nevertheless easy to read. Sometimes the text may be confusing, e.g. “Acer laetum [=A. cappadocicum] is confined to West Georgia… In East Georgia, A. laetum is restricted to moist mountain forests” (p. 87).

There are a lot of small color photos. The only maps are a vegetation type map and a protected areas map.

Puts a smile on your litso

Well oh my little brothers, patient and tolerant though I may be, I just couldn't help but have a malenky smeck at some of the grazhny customer reviews by the like indignant vecks and ptitsas here. Like the starry ptitsa who creeches about the like excessive ultraviolence, saying this is not her idea of "entertainment". Personally droogies, I find Burgess's ingenious creation of a whole new vernacular language and youth subculture to be hilariously horrorshow entertaining. The more specific point the naysayers miss is that Burgess is using the violence merely as a vehicle to pose some deep moral questions about the nature of morality and the seeming impossibility of expunging violence from the human soul. A lot of reviewers are also falling into the trap of thinking that Burgess intended merely to shock or to sensationalise, which couldn't be further from the truth. His tongue is very firmly in cheek. Persevere through the first chapter or so and the nadsat becomes strangely "right", somehow enhancing the realness of the world Burgess creates. 4 stars rather than five only because of a redemption story in the final chapter which doesn't quite fit. Nevertheless, this remains a courageous and darkly comedic philosophical masterpiece which will reward those willing to push through the intimidating language.

Just so you know, the Kindle version of the Norton edition is just the novel and Burgess' intro. It doesn't contain the supplementary materials that make a Norton edition valuable to have.

When I started reading the novel for the first time it seemed boring and the language was also very difficult

A clockwork orange by Anthony Burges was first written in 1962 is a completely different type of novel that one would expect to read at the first place. When I started reading the novel for the first time it seemed boring and the language was also very difficult. The author uses a lot of slang words. The main character of the novel is a 14 year old named Alex when the novel starts. The novel is very violent. The author has used a very challenging vocabulary other than the standard language. I really liked some of the words like milicents droogs and devochkas are used to describe the police, brothers and girls I mean that seemed cool. Initially when I read the book it seemed to be very disturbing and boring, Alex seems like a complete psychopath at the beginning but then he kind of changes This is a classic book it may seem very boring at times and you might not want to read it but as the novel goes the story becomes more and more intriguing.. I started liking this book when I read the fourth of it. It was easy to understand after a while even a glossary of the words is given at the back to get familiar with the terms used by the writer. I read it thoroughly with attention so I could understand even the more minute details about the story. You might want to read it more than once also. Like there is part in the book where Alex jumps from an apartment window. Before jumping off he says, “I shut my glazzies and fell the cold winds on my litso, then I jumped. “ After this line he tells that, “I jumped, O my brothers, and fell on the sidewalk hard, but I did not snuff it, oh no if I had snuffed it I would not be here to write what I have written.” This is first time I got to know that Alex is actually writing the story otherwise it’s like he is just telling his story. There is also a lot of code switching in the novel as well. . I liked the 21 chapter idea of Anthony Burges. His book had 21 chapters as like a man gets mature when he is 21. Book was very thoughtfully the book ends differently as there are only 20 chapters in the US version of the book. I wish the US version had 21 full chapters as originally written by Anthony Burges.

Excellent book on exterior envelope materials and principles

I guess this is another Birkhauser "manual" series that are
indispensable for architects who's interests lie in
exterior detailing.

20% of the book pays attention to the dry stuff
(basic physics, structural issues, thermal & moisture
performances, etc) of exterior principles .

60%, obviously main body of book, introduces
different types of envelope systems based on materials.
Starting from stone, it covers clay, concrete, timber, metal,
glass, and plastics.

Last 20% of the book covers special facade systems that are
more relevant to recent sustainable consciousness.
Double-glass and solar manipulators are covered in addition to
solar energy concepts.

Contents of each section are typically covered in the order of
historical overview, material properties, and case studies.
If the prospect reader owns any of the "Construction Manual"
series by Birkhauser, then there is definitely many overlaps.
(Both in writings and case images provided)

One plus point is that the book can serve diverse audience group.
Depending on the years of experience in the profession,
projects provided are inspirational enough for students at school,
and at the same time, informative enough for project architects in
the office.

The real juicy part of the book is that the case studies provided are
very recent and experimental, hence eye-riveting. The detail drawings
are just enough to, not overburden us, but make us engaging. And there
are plenty of in-depth discussion on recent finds on preventive treatment
of each materials.

One caution. If the prospect reader is not good at reading dry
physics-like book (as is often the case with architects...),
I highly recommend skipping first 20% of the book for later read.

Great For Architecture Students

I ordered the Facade Manual to help supplement my Architecture 431 class/Integrations. The book is broken down by materials which I found to be an asset when choosing materials during the design process. I would recommend this manual to anyone interested in how systems can be successfully integrated into the overall building design or anyone interested in learning how to properly detail key elements in section.

A valuable book enough to consider buying, however it is a little bit expensive....
Technical descriptions are valuable, very nice schematic drawings and example figures included.
Again, a little bit expensive book for its massive content (but not for technical content)...

Problem with this book is that it is very small.I want to know more about Jalal AL Din Rumi.This book tells many things about this person in short way.Little biography of Rumi is given in this book.Some words of wisdom from Rumis writings are also given in this book.Very small but interesting book this is.

Very impressive book to read! This is very helpful book. I am about to take the course online but I am glad to have found this book. I know that this will help me with stress and be more productive with work and life. The main thing that I feel for anyone especially myself is that if we can redirect our brain from always going to the negative, bad and etc. This would be a great thing for everyone. Canadian Version!

I also ordered the correct book, but was sent the Canadian version. I see now that I simply ordered the cheapest 'new' edition from the American page, but it is NOT the same book. It needs to have the Canadian details on the American page so that shoppers don't conveniently use the one-click Amazon shopping tool, but receive the wrong edition of the book they need. I am having a hard time matching this edition up with the one my professor is using.

there's good stuff in there

It goes deep, and on so many levels. It won't teach you to snowboard, but it will teach the snowboarder THE wisdom, the lessons, how to weather the ups and downs of life. I find myself wanting to go back for more wisdom, there's good stuff in there.
