The Anatomy of Command

"In Harm's Way" has always been a favorite movie, but only recently did I realize it was based upon this book. Luckily, Amazon provided a copy of this out-of-print treasure.

James Bassett, Captain, US Naval Reserve (retired), handled Admiral William F. Halsey's press relations from the Guadalcanal campaign to the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. While what he wrote was fiction, he drew from actual events and people to create a fascinating story of the Pacific War in a backwater area, with insufficient resources to do what was required and too far from the other operational areas to get timely support, if those areas even had the means to support so early in the US' involvement in WWII.

From Pearl Harbor into late 1942, we are privy to Captain, then Admiral, Rockwell Torrey's thought processes and inner turmoil that accompanies many fateful decisions. We see the human behind a cold and distant exterior, and view the interplay of commanders and those they command. Torrey is assigned the impossible--to get a stalled operation moving, mount an invasion against a supposedly impregnable stronghold, and stop the enemy's drive against overwhelming odds--while dealing with a hesitant and politically powerful senior area commander and his former senator aide.

The story also contains one of the most vivid descriptions of a modern sea battle I've ever read. Bassett really knew how to pull the reader into the story and keep us there until the ending.

This book is a keeper, and I hope it will very soon be available on Kindle.

Wonderful Book That Outshines Film

Rockwell Torrey is a career naval captain who has served since World War I. Now it is the dawn of another world war as his ship patrols outside Pearl Harbor. His world has been somewhat sheltered since his marriage failed years before. He goes nowhere and mingles with no one. With the outbreak of the war his past begins to emerge in the form of a son he barely knew. He also finds love again, but with the war taking front seat, he must balance his personal life with his tasks in the navy. He must deal with egos of other commanders while striving to do his job. A monumental task while dealing with those who are trying to advance in rank and glory. These do not concern him. Along the way he must deal with the antics of his friend Paul Eddington whose life is a disater. In the end he must risk sacrificing himself and his command to save a landing force and everyone he cares about. This book was made into an epic movie about 1965 which is a wonderful film. The book of course goes into more detail about everyone and their lives. If you like either or the other both are great pieces of work.

About a WWII Pacific Naval Operation

The movie "In Harm's Way" with John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Patricia Neal among others was made from this novel, The story of Captain and later Rear Admiral Rockwell Torrey beginning with the Pearl Harbor attack and then being put in charge of a bogged down operation from a hesitant Vice Admiral and all the trials and tribulations involved therein, a little romance with Nurse Maggie Haynes and getting to know his estranged son Jere. The movie stays fairly true to the book.

Every American needs to read this book.
Our history was so white washed, and I was never told any thing like this in school.
The minute men were hired to kill anyone in disagreement with the war.
I love knowledge. I hate being lied to.
From the beginning of WW1 this country has been lied to, cheated, and if you have a brain you know that ALL news is controlled by the president/government from the beginning of WW1 and they never let go.

A very sweet novella that will bring you to tears. I loved this!

The Power of the Matchmaker,though only a novella and 60 pages long, has a huge message. The matchmaker truly has a tremendous power to change lives for good or bad. At the beginning of this story, a prequel to the 12 book Power of the Matchmaker series coming out in 2016, we see how a matchmaker destroys Mae Li's hopes and dreams to marry the love of her life Chen Zu. You can clearly see through Heather's beautiful writing how much Chen and Mae Li love each other.

Mae Li runs away from home and the man she didn't want to marry, when she realizes Chen Zu will marry another girl arranged by the village matchmaker.

With no hope in her life to be able to survive on her own, she meets Ms. Tan, a matchmaker in the city of Shanghai. Mae Li, now Pearl, is taken under Ms. Tan's wings to become the new matchmaker once the old woman dies. She is given a coin that is the "Power" of the matchmaker, in that it will only work if the matchmaker forsakes her own true love in order to bring together others in love. There is also something very secret that the coin can do, but I'm not going to say what it is because I've already given too much away.

The very end of this short story had me crying. The last scene takes place many years later when once again Chen Zu and Mae Li/Pearl meet again. They still love each other and it's a very tender scene. Pearl stays true to her calling as the matchmaker sacrificing her own love for others. But, there is a moment between them that has to do with a pearl comb that made my heart ache. Oh, Heather Moore, you are a master at your craft in creating emotions and making your readers feel deeply for your characters.

This novella is a must read before you begin reading the first of the 12 books that will be coming out in 2016 about The Power of the Matchmaker. Personally, I can't wait to read each and every one.

Must Read Romance Series!

What a great story! I think it is absolutely awesome that various authors came together to write continuations of the same person's story! Great book, you won't want to put it down!

I hope the next books are better...a LOT better!

Ever since I heard about the Matchmaker Series I have been anxiously awaiting 2016 and the start of the novels. I wanted to read the story of the matchmaker but I wasn’t that excited about this story. My instincts were correct about this story. I know it was an introduction to the matchmaker and the idea of the entire series so I did give the author a little break. It was just a story. A very short story about how Mae Li became Pearl, the Matchmaker. I am not going to lie, reading this story did not make me think about how excited I am to read the next twelve stories in the series. I am really hoping the rest of the books are better than this one. I wish there had been more to this story. I will tell you I was glad I received a free copy of this story in exchange for an honest review! I think I would have felt a little cheated if I had paid for this very short little story.

In chapters i-iv, Chandrasekhar presents the "classical" background necessary to his argument: the laws of thermodynamics (from Carathéodory's rigorous axiomatic standpoint), adiabatic and polytropic laws, and the work of Ritter, Emden, Kelvin, and others who developed the applied mathematics of stellar structure. Chapters v-xii discuss modern results: the formal theory of radiation, the equations of radiative equilibrium, the luminosity formula, the theory of stellar envelopes, Gibbs statistical mechanics (the quantum mechanical version), white dwarfs, etc. The closing chapter outlines some general trends in current investigations of the problem.
Appendixes cover physical and astronomical constants; the masses of light atoms; the masses, luminosities, and radii of the stars, derived hydrogen contents, central densities and central temperatures, and tables of white dwarf functions.

Chandrasekhar on Stellar Structure

This is one of the greatest classics in the astrophysical literature. I bought my first copy of the Dover edition in 1964, when I was a graduate student. I finally
wore it out (the cover fell off), and I was happy to see it still in print by
Dover, so I could buy another.

This book contains Chandra's masterful thoughts about, and analysis of, stellar structure, particularly on the structure of white dwarfs. It was his work at Cambridge in the `30s that showed that the mass of a white dwarf could not exceed a certain limit (universally known as the "Chandrasekhar Limit"), or the relativistically degenerate electrons in its core could not support the weight of the overlying layers, and the star would collapse. In principle the collapse could proceed without limit, and the star could collapse to "a point". This seminal work, for which, ironically, he received the Nobel Prize some 50 or so years later, was ridiculed by Eddington, then regarded as the "most authoritative astrophysicist in Britain", and Chandra chose to immigrate to the United States. (FORTUNATE for us!)

There as a Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago for several decades, he mastered diverse fields, and wrote definitive monographs on Radiative Transfer, Stellar Dynamics, Plasma Physics, and General Relativity. He seemed to take special delight in working on G.R., and produced a virtual faculty-sized group of graduate students all of whom distinguished themeselves in that field.

It is interesting to speculate why R.H. Fowler, also Professor at Cambridge, who with Stoner, who had worked out the theory of relativistic degeneracy (!), did not support Chandra's work against Eddington's illogical attack. It is also interesting to speculate why Chandra did not make the connection between his work and Karl Schwarzschild's previous discovery of the first exact solution of Einstein's equations of general relativity: a singularity in which an amount of matter greater than the "Schwarzschild Limit" collapses to a point, which today we would call a "black hole".

But it must be remembered that an equation of state for matter at nuclear densities and above did not yet exist; and Chandra had such high standards of rigor he would not have time to waste on speculations, nor the temperment to do so.

This book is a jewel. It is required reading for all serious students (at all levels, from first year graduate students to distinguished professors) of astrophysics. In it they will find scientific analysis of the greatest clarity, with the deepest insight, which sets the standard for all subsequent work in the field.

Unfortunately they will not learn about Chandra's incisive clarity on every matter, whether scientific or pracitical, nor about the depth of his humanity and generosity. THAT they should seek to learn from his colleagues who are still alive (Chandra lived into his 80s), and from his many students.

This reprint of the 1939 book by Chandrasekhar lets you read through one of the major works on the evolution of a star. The author takes physics equations, labouriously discovered over centuries, in terrestrial environments. He applies them logically to the vastly different circumstances of a star. Yet, step by step, he shows how we can arrive at an understanding of stellar processes that jibes with much that was observable in the 1930s. A tribute to the precision and insight of his thinking, as well as to the power of physics to model phenomena anywhere in the universe.

Actually, in the subsequent decades, the equations derived in the book held up quite well as coherent explanations of stars. While the field has moved on, the explanatory pedagogy given in this book may still often be seen in recent astrophysics texts.
