About the Author

Donald E. Carlucci has been an engineer at the U.S. Army Armament, Research, Development and Engineering Center, Picatinny Arsenal, since May 1989. He is currently the U.S. Army senior scientist for computational structural modeling based at Picatinny. He holds a doctor of philosophy in mechanical engineering (2002) and a master of engineering (mechanical) (1995) degree from the Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1987, he received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, New Jersey. Dr. Carlucci is an adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at the Stevens Institute of Technology.

Sidney S. Jacobson was a researcher, designer, and developer of ammunition and weapons at the U.S. Army’s Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey for 35 years. He rose from junior engineer to associate director for R&D at the arsenal. In 1972, he was awarded an Arsenal Educational Fellowship to study continuum mechanics at Princeton University where he received his second MS degree (1974). He earned a master of science in applied mechanics from Stevens Institute of Technology (1958) and a bachelor of arts in mathematics from Brooklyn College (1951). He retired in 1986 but maintains his interest in the field through teaching, consulting, and lecturing.

A complete description of all phases from gun to the target

This discussion concerning how a projectile starts its flight, flies to the target, and does things to the target is rather complete. My expertise is more in terminal ballistics (what happens against steel armor), but I learned a number of things I had not found previously in any other source. The only thing that I would like is a set of tables giving common examples of the values of various quantities used in the formulae, such as the "Hugonoit Elastic Limit" used in the metal armor always-ricochet angle formulae, for example -- a formula cannot be tested if the values necessary to solve it are not available. Tables for chemical parameters are included, but not the needed metallurgical parameters. Alternatively, sources for finding these parameters could be included in the text. Minor point, though.

Her outfit will have “belts that glitter, tights with stripes, and shoes that shine.” Full-color cartoons capture her fashion style with ruffles, bling, and even goggles. However, when the big day arrives, Missy's mom has another idea about her picture-day outfit. Pouty, angry, and sad, the child is sent off to school without “ruffles, rainbows, ribbons, or sparkles.” After a few arguments with her classmate Oscar over trading chocolate pudding for carrots at lunch, it's finally time for the picture, and what Missy and Oscar end up wearing will surprise children. Girly girls who have outgrown the Fancy Nancy beginning readers will flock to this illustrated early chapter book about fashion-obsessed Kiki. Writing and drawing in an OTT (over the top) diary her mother gave her, Kiki discusses her BFFs in the LLGC (Lotus Lane Girls Club). Our girl loves an acronym; her sweater-wearing dog, Maxi; selecting outfits for Funky Fashion Friday; and stating facts (FACT: “I am 100% inspired by Mom’s kimonos!”). Throughout, there are hip line illustrations that reinforce the text, like a map of Kiki’s neighborhood, with each of her friends’ houses labeled, as well as IM messages and doodles. The plot moves quickly and includes your basics: friendship drama, a missing dog, pajama parties. This offers more of a reading challenge than early readers (particularly given the hand-lettered type on ruled notebook paper), and it is a nice stepping stone to more advanced chapter books. A cute book that has its own place.

As a mom of three strong, self motivated, A+ readers and one reluctant reader, it varies what makes a "good" book. I purchased Lotus Lane #1: Kiki for my third grade reluctant reader. She has had some fairly disturbing books, such as "Dragon Awakes," forced upon her in school, and she is turned off by books with trauma in them. Kiki is lighter, but it still has it's educational merits. Also thankfully Kiki is not sassy! The format is written as a diary, which got my daughter interested in writing in her own diary. Lines are used to simulate the journal, but the unintended benefit is that the lines help my daughter with eye tracking. She doesn't need a straight edge when reading this book. Kiki's friends are organized, and they even have a chart of their clubs/activities, where they meet, and what each activity club is about. I was happy my daughter had extra practice with her chart reading skills. Regarding the texting: My daughter's friends are in 3rd and 4th grade. Many of them use texting lingo in their notes to each other. My daughter felt out of the loop and wanted to learn. The texting used in the book is explained in plain English with proper spelling. This provided a motivation for my daughter to read the book, as well as a chance for us to discuss proper spelling when writing for school vs texting. I do not recommend this book for an in-depth study in children's literature. However I do recommend this book for reluctant readers interested in books about fashion and friendship and for readers that need something "fun" and "safe" to read before bedtime to keep their thoughts positive.

Love for Lotus Lane!

I like this new series. Kiki is just the right mix of fluff and brains. She is a girl who likes to have sleepovers and eats cupcakes with fun flavors. She is a girl who sets goals and seeks to meet them. She is confronted with a situation (a new girl on her street who isn't nice) and although she isn't happy, she doesn't resort to name calling or plotting the ruin of the girl. She just seeks the friendship of her two best friends and continues on about her life and her goal of designing fashion. And, as luck would have it, she learns that the new girl isn't really that mean by the end of the book. Kiki and the new girl don't end up BFF's but they also don't end up enemies.

I think this book would be good for low level reading older grade girls such as 3-5 as well as the intended audience. I'm not sure a typical first grader could read this book on their own. The book is styled like a notebook/diary - the pages all have notebook lines on them. It is also sprinkled with texting talk like OTT (over the top) and BFF (best friends forever) as well as "fact" boxes. And there are also screen shots of the girls texting one another complete with texting lingo and emoticons. Non-texting girls may be a bit confused trying to read it, but then again, maybe there aren't that many nontexting children around anymore?! This book is a little fluffy, Kiki loves fashion, has sleepovers and make cupcakes with her BFF's but it's also got positive themes for girls. Kiki's mom is a professional stylist (showing a career in fashion), her friend Lulu is "always coming up with money-making ideas" and the girls' favorite movie is about a girl detective (who leaves a trail of glitter as she solves magical mysteries). It also has a bit of culture in it, Lulu is half French, Coco is Italian and the new girl is from Japan. Kiki learns about zen gardens and kimonos as she learns more about the new girl.

A teacher could use a bit of this book for a lesson in alliteration. The girls all live on Lotus Lane in Amber Acres. The main character is Kiki Keenan and her friends are Coco Corvino and Lulu Lyons. The new girl is Mika Maeda.

The illustrations in the book are similar to the Wimpy Kid series (black and white, stick figures with round heads) and distributed throughout the book in a similar way to Wimpy Kid, but these illustrations contain more detailed drawings than the Wimpy Kid series. Overall, this is a fun new series!

Not easy to read, subject matter is so superficial that I felt myself and my daughter getting dumber as we read it. Too much "texting" in a book for little girls. We couldn't finish it...my 8 year old hated it.

The book is written in a clear and easy manner

I really like the books because of many of its features including:
1. The case studies are really helpful as they really explain the topics and they implement what's been learned in the text.
2. The answers are provided for case studies.
3. The text is designed for someone who has no Medical Knowledge.
4. The figures are really helpful

I would have liked:
1. The important terms could have been highlighted for easy reference.
2. A list of useful websites in one place would have been helpful
3. Some questions at the end of each chapter would have helped.

Overall, the book is an excellent source for anyone willing to learn what Epidemiology is and how to apply it in the field of medicine to make much more data-based, informed decision. I would recommend to all physicians or administrators looking to make clinical decisions.

Brilliant as usual :)

This book was a great addition to the Skulduggery Pleasant series that helped me understand and learn more about the world the books are set in. Landy's writing is, as usual, amazing, witty and humorous. The stories were all hugely entertaining and some were truly scary, such as Get Behind Thee, Bubba Moon. The stories also filled in so much background information for the books. 5 Stars.

This book is a masterpiece! A true finish to an incredible series! I was hanging on for more at the end, I can't wait to see where he takes with after this! This is one of those novels that you cannot spoil, the reader has to experience it for themselves!

Great website - great book

I've been a huge fan of [...] so when I heard they were coming out with a book (Volume 1, meaning future volumes?) I knew I'd grab a copy.

I think they picked a nice overall summary of the style and range of projects they feature and there are quite a few that I'm adding to my To-Do List. I've been wanting to build a CNC of my own for a while, and the example in the book is a nice start. I also have wanted to build my own Hands++ to hold small parts while I work on them - the one in the book is perfect.

If you're a fan of the website, you'll enjoy the book. If you're not familiar with the website, the book will give you a jump start and help you avoid sifting through the 1000s of projects on their, looking for the best ones.

Scattered throughout the book are smaller collections of mini-projects that have a theme - an example is a list of projects you make using a simple Altoids tin. The book is in color, too, and has a nice layout and style to it that is easy to read.

The book also has a nice list at the end of projects that didn't make it into the book but they do provide the name of the projects so you can search for them at instructables.com.

Nice book - I hope they do more volumes.

So many things to try out, and you don't have to be an expert to do so...

I love this renaissance in "do it yourself" projects and building things out of available parts. Doesn't mean I'm necessarily any *good* at it, but it opens my eyes to how common things can be used in uncommon ways. Make magazine from O'Reilly has put together some of the best and most popular projects from the instructables.com site to create the book The Best of Instructables Volume I: Do-It-Yourself Projects from the World's Biggest Show & Tell. There's enough stuff here to keep you occupied for weeks, and you don't have to be a engineering genius to do many of them.

The book is divided up into sections that touch on general themes: Home & Garden; Food; Photography; Science; Computers; Electronics; Robotics; Ride; Craft; Entertainment; Fun & Games; and Tools. For instance, the book gets off to a quick start with a two-page layout on Ikea hacks. I was immediately intrigued with the Tool Box Hack, using a Fira minichest and a pair of Kosing handles. I can do that! The ice straws were a nice touch, also. Moving on, I learned how to make "carbonated fruit" with a plastic water bottle and dry ice. One of my spare USB thumb drives might be destined for a LEGO casing. And who knew Altoid tins could be used in so many ways? Everything from a survival kit to a miniature barbecue unit (for those very small hamburgers). For those who are used to welding, the Ride chapter has plenty of cool bike mods that could be fun. Heck, even learning how to make an earbud headphone cord wrapper from an old credit card is worth the price of admission (not to mention the time savings of having to unravel the cord every time you use it).

As with all books of this type, some of the projects will strike you as "I must build that now!", while others will have you thinking "why would I ever want to do that?" I will not be making stuffed animal headphones now or at any time in the future, thank you very much! But the overall package of projects selected here will appeal to a wide range of interests and skill levels. And since all these projects have been part of the Instructables website, you can always head over there to get additional information or tweaks that others have come up with.

The Best of Instructables is a fun book, and I plan on having a few "toys" with me at the next geek conference I attend...

A creative book for a creative mind

Let me start off by saying this is a innovative "how to make" book with vivid pictures and easy to follow step by step instructions. Some of the projects go to the extent of providing information on where to acquire the items and about how much it would cost to make the item. Anyone can easily find at least a couple of projects that would interest him/her.

There were many projects that were astonishing to me, such as the project where one could make a computer out of a Nintendo game console or the project where one could make a wallet out of a
computer keyboard. Although there were many intriguing projects, there were a couple that just seemed out of place such as the project where
it showed how to eat a banana like a monkey (it was pretty ironic because it was the same way how I eat my bananas).

In the end, this book is well worth it whether if you want to create a fun project with the whole family or if you just like creating things out of ordinary materials.

Disappointing. Lazy. Incomplete.

I was really looking forward to getting this book. Navigating the admission requirements for veterinary schools has been difficult. Unlike other professional programs, each veterinary school has different requirements. For some schools this just means additional courses must be taken. For others it may mean that specific courses must have specific prerequisites in order to satisfy the school's requirements or must be taken at a 4 year university as opposed to a community college. Sadly, this guide does not always notify the user of these vital subtleties.

For example, the guide only notes 3 things for the University of Illinois under "Prerequisites for Admission." These include 8 hours of biological science, 16 hours of chemical science, and 8 hours of physics. Head to U of I's website and you see that biochemistry is a required course and the only qualifying course is one that has organic chemistry as a prerequisite. A slew of profiles for other schools also fail to note this. Not all undergraduate universities (including mine) offer biochemistry with an organic prerequisite. Someone relying on this guide could be forced to retake biochemistry in order to fulfill this requirement because they simply did not know about it.

The book is also completely inconsistent with its break down of required courses. For example, the guide lists out each course requirement completely for some schools, noting that some must be taken at 4 year universities etc. while others simply direct you to the school's website! Really? What was the purpose of purchasing a book on veterinary school requirements if you are just going to direct me to the school's website?!

Again, some schools list some information on previous entering classes including average GPA, science GPA, and GRE scores while others list nothing. It is quite frustrating and unhelpful.

Sadly, this book has proven to be a huge disappointment. Until the authors step up their game or a competing publication comes around I strongly suggest sticking to the old way of doing things.

I'm finishing up my bachelors degree and had no idea about any schools for a DVM. Getting this book has been a lifesaver. It has every school in the country plus some and tells you exactly what is required for applying to those schools. It's a great book for people seriously looking into veterinary school. Glad I found it.
