Better 2nd Edition

I bought the first edition of this book and was initially going to give it two to three stars due to the terrible chapter on normal maps, written no less by a guest writer and not the author himself.

Upon seeing there was a new edition however, I ordered it and saw that it contains new material, including updates to the offending chapters and am happy to now give it 5 stars. It is a real improvement, and though the chapters have been changed since the first edition (for example, the said normal mapping is now in the later parts of the book), the content overall is top notch, and matches the selection of the subject matter making it the perfect source.

What makes this book/volume worth its weight in gold is the breath of materials it covers while still giving you the depth necessary. It assumes you already have a background in 3ds Max and is indeed a perfect complement to it after you learned the basics. Although it is intended for 3D for games as the title suggests, what you learn is applicable to all aspects of 3D, particularly topics that are the most common and fundamental in modeling that other books do not cover.

For example, one of the better books in Max is Poly-Modeling for 3DSMax, which has good content for nuances in modeling, but the forgettable lessons there are matched only by the author refusing to even discuss UV mapping when even a single chapter would have helped a lot. Ditto for other books which are either too shallow and generalized, or simply don't have enough meat. They just don't hold a candle compared to this book (now, the first volume in a set of two), which covers what you need to know while covering all necessary aspects not just for games but 3D modeling in general.

I can't wait to read the next volume.

Difficult to follow due to author skipping steps

To clarify a few things right from the beginning: The author of this book is clearly a very strong 3D artist, but there are some serious problems with this book as it pertains to it being advertised as book to beginning this type of modeling.

If I had been a reasonably experienced modeler, specifically with 3ds Max, this book would likely be more effective. But the fact of the matter is that the author frequently skips important steps, apparently assuming that you will just know to do these things based on the random small pictures and vague narratives.

I would not recommend this book for a beginner or even a moderately experienced 3dsMax user/artist.

The ISBN 0240815823 (3ds Max Modeling for Games, 2nd Ed.: Insider's Guide to Game Character, Vehicle, and Environment Modeling: Volume I) is an extensive and very detailed tutorial. It shares many similarities with the industry standard "Inside AutoCAD", and it is almost equally useful, though without the very basic information, but still sufficient and quite understandable especially for those with a previous CADD experience. It might not be the best book for total novices.
3ds Max is 3D modeling, animation, and rendering software for games, film, and television development. This book is a step-by-step tutorial teaching only the game character, vehicle, and environment modeling aspects of 3ds Max. The explanations by example are very simple, synonymous and clear. Almost all tutorial pages contain from one to several illustrations - mostly program screen snapshots. The book's content is self-explanatory, and it could serve as a reference on the subject too.

I Can't Turn Away by Ashley Bowling is one of those stories that is so different from anything you have read before. It's unique and will have you mesmerized from the beginning.

The diary entries take you on a journey with the character. One that is filled with lots of happy moments, sad moments, and in the end you will feel deceived, but in a good way. I was at a loss for words and overall in shock. I couldn't believe the ending.

If you enjoy a short story that will just blow you away, this is the one to get. It’s suspenseful and leaves the reader shell-shocked and begging for more.

However, the P/E is a backward-looking measure and just because the company earned £1 per share last year it doesn't necessarily mean it will earn anything like that in the foreseeable future. Or, a low P/E can mean a company is deservedly cheap because it is in financial difficulty - in this case the company is likely to become cheaper yet or even go into administration.

About the Author
After completing his BSc in Mathematical Statistics and Operational Research at Exeter, Keith Anderson worked for some years as a systems developer, most recently at Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt. He then did an MSc in Investment Analysis at Stirling, where he won the Morley Prize as the top academically in his year. For his PhD at the ICMA Centre, Reading University, Keith showed that different ways of calculating the Price-Earnings ratio could significantly improve investor returns. He worked as a lecturer at Durham University Business School for two years before moving to York in 2008. Keith has written a number of books, papers and articles.

well-written and interesting

OK - the only previous review was completely negative. Having borrowed the book through my local library, and very much enjoyed reading it, I added it to my Amazon cart to consider buying it for my library to read again. So I was pretty mystified by that review. At first I thought, well, there's another of my lazy-minded, Americo-centric compatriots...ugh. Now I suspect it's a pre-emptive strike...the suggestions in this book make so much sense and are so straightforward, maybe Jim Rogers is afraid too many people will read the book and weaken the strategy! I held off writing this review to see if anyone else would chime in, but I'm finally stepping in primarily out of a sense of fairness. In strong contrast to Mr. Rogers, I thought the book was very entertainingly and accessibly written, and I wasn't bothered by the focus on non-US markets, since most of the investing books available cover the US thoroughly. When necessary, the author does reference US data, so there's no real confusion about what the implications of his strategy are for US investors. The author gives interesting background on the history of the P/E as an indicator and basis for investing, and adds his own work. I'm a relatively meat-and-potatos investor, and I'm not sure I'll follow through on his approach (although I'd be very interested in a mutual fund based on it), but I came away at least feeling better informed about what P/E can tell me about stocks and funds. And how can you complain about an investing book that's actually fun to read??

More for a British audience

I was disappointed in this book. The book is written more for a British audience than American. The book uses British pound symbols instead of dollars, the appendix contains EPS and P/E for the FTSE 100 index instead of an American index, it has section titles like: "The P/E effect in the UK" and differences in spelling convention like capitalisation vs capitalization, etc. It may have been because of the above that I thought the book was difficult to follow and understand.

About the Author

Jonathan Zdziarski is better known as the hacker "NerveGas" in the iPhone development community. His work in cracking the iPhone helped lead the effort to port the first open source applications, and his book, iPhone Open Application Development, taught developers how to write applications for the popular device long before Apple introduced its own SDK. Prior to the release of iPhone Forensics, Jonathan wrote and supported an iPhone forensics manual distributed exclusively to law enforcement. Jonathan frequently consults law enforcement agencies and assists forensic examiners in their investigations. He teaches an iPhone forensics workshop in his spare time to train forensic examiners and corporate security personnel.

Jonathan is also a full-time research scientist specializing in machine learning technology to combat online fraud and spam, an effort that led him to develop networking products capable of learning how to protect customers. He is founder of the DSPAM project, a high-profile, next-generation spam filter that was acquired in 2006 by Sensory Networks, Inc. He lectures widely on the topic of spam and is a foremost researcher in the fields of machine-learning and algorithmic theory.

Well-written and informative, but over-priced

I wish the author had just put the info on a free website. The book is just a document, a pamphlet as another reviewer mentioned. I feel a bit ripped-off. In fact, in one place the author actually says "before proceeding, ensure that the firmware ... falls within the range of versions supported by this document." He is referring to the book but calling it a document. I think he intended it to be just a document and O'Reilly convinced him to make it a book so O'Reilly could make some money.

As far as technical material, it's all good and well-written. There are a few cases where it appears the O'Reilly editor might have cluelessly changed a sentence, but those cases are rare compared to some professionally-edited books. There are some typos, even in the author's bio! But few compared to many books. The index was rushed, I'm guessing. It didn't include the items I wanted to find.

The only other caveat I can think of is that if you are considering forensically analyzing your iPhone just for fun, be prepared for quite a bit of work and possible headaches. With firmware 2.x, there are numerous, reasonably complex steps that must be followed. You will need lots of time and patience and little aversion to risk. Note that you are jail-breaking your phone so that you can install utilities in the system partition, which voids the warranty from what I understand. Also, you could brick your iPhone, though in theory you could restore it if there are problems.

All in all, great info for forensics examiners in law-enforcement and corporations. I give it three stars instead of five because of the high price for a pamphlet.

Outdated, author unhelpful. Stay away!

This book is definitly not for you in active forensics. The methods described are outdated, the book only covers up til iphone OS 2.x, nothing you will find in a realworld scenario 2009/2010.
Upon contacting the author for an updated method, which oreilly boasts about on their website aswell as the author, the author wants you to pay him $5000 annually. Keep away from this charlatan, do some online research instead, you will learn more, starting with dev-teams redsnow and othe FREE utils, you can modify those utils to do the work, forensically sound.

I am very disapointed. Shame on you Zdziarsky. Shame on you O'reilly books.

Great introduction to iPhone forensics

This is an invaluable resource to understanding forensic details in regards to the iPhone. While it is small in size (coming in at just over 100 pages), it is dense in detail. This book provides good detail about where data on the iPhone is located, how to recover it, and how to keep your forensic footprint small.

For readers not as versed in computer forensics, the book does a good job introducing the subject. The iPhone is disceted in detail, and much information is provided regarding how to access the details of the phone that Apple doesn't want you to get at. Once you get at that information, the book shows how to extract that data onto a non-iPhone device. This is a great read for anyone who may have to deal with recovering data off an iPhone due to terminiation or other law enforcement issues.

My only complaint about the book is that this first edition was printed in September 2008, so it's missing some information about current versions of the iPhone firmware and hardware for the iPhone 3GS iPhone 4. Aside from that single issue, this is an excellent resource, and certainly a great resource for hardware up to the iPhone 3 and firmware versions up to 2.x.

I like John Saul's books a lot. He's my 2nd fav. author. Dean Koontz takes the boat as the best. This book is very typical of other of Saul's books, the teens get the "axe"--so to speak. I liked it, but the end was often hard to follow, maybe it's just me...good friendly read overall. One scene was so detailed (when Jed is crawling through the tunnel) that I had to stop reading, and stretch out my legs for I have a small case of claustrophobia.

Excellent novel

To say that this is a horror novel would be inaccurate because it is in many ways a mystery novel. More precisely put, this novel is a combination of both mystery and horror, mixed with a little mysticism, romance, and some social commentary.
Nevetheless, just because the novel doesn't fit exactly into any of the established genre doesn't make it bad. In fact, this is a an excellent story that will keep you away from doing anything else but finishing this story. It certainly did for me.
The novel does go into certain length to introduce the characters and set up the background, which tend to leave the reader hanging. But once the story pick up, you'll love it. Just have the patience to read the first several chapters, and everything will fall into place afterward.

Eye Opening

I was amazed at the level of detail. It's heavily documented, which is refreshing in an alternative medicine book. In fact, if what Dr. Douglass says is true (and I'm pretty confident it is), then the mainstream medical establishment has a lot of explaining to do about why they have rejected and ignored light-based therapies that have produced excellent, well-documented clinical or double-blind results over the course of a century.
He also does an excellent job in not overselling his claims. He pulls no punches about when and where the therapy failed to work. When it does work, he also doesn't hold back in his enthusiasm. Some might be put off by this last fact, but I think his presentation is well-balanced, overall.
My only criticism is that, while most documentation is excellent, I wish the author had paid a bit more attention to completing all of his references. I have a second edition copy, which includes a reference on page 232 to something called, _AIDS - The End of Civilization_, Chapter 6. Unfortunately, there are no other descriptions of that book that I could find, such as who wrote or published it. I learned later that it was another book by the same author, but that fact should have been included in the reference.)
Another example of an inaccurate reference is on page 236, where he mentions a blue light therapy performed on a little girl in Chapter 14. Unfortunately, Chapter 14 is about a doctor with AIDS and how he has dealt with this personal crisis. It has no reference to either blue light therapy or the little girl.
Such mistakes aside, the overall value of the book is tremendous. I recommend it heartily to anyone whose mind isn't closed like a steel trap.
I also recommend another book by the author called Hydrogen Peroxide, Medical Miracle. The two books should really be considered companions of each other.

Factual history and indications of this excellent therapy

Dr. Douglass is a leading American expert on Photoluminescence (aka Blood Irradiation, Biophotonic Therapy, etc.). In this book he provides a great deal of very useful original source material from the early American clinical trials of this formidable therapy. He has travelled to Russia to consult with physicians there and includes some material from recent Russian sources as well. The book is written in an engaging style, with many insights into topics related to this therapeutic use of the chemiluminescent property of human blood cells. The abundant evidence from this book makes it clear that mainstream medicine has allowed an excellent therapy to slip through the cracks. Into the Light

DR. Campbell's book "into the Light" is fantabulous. On a scale of 1 to 5, it is a 20. It is a must read if you believe in alternative medicine. It is sad that we can't get the FDA to approve of this life-saving treatment. This treatment saved my mother's life when conventional medicine put her in the hospital 4 times within one month.

In addition, this treatment saved my wife's life when she came down with Valley Fever. It also saved me from having heart surgery for an irregular heart beat. I am so grateful that I will not need that expensive and possibly fatal surgery. Anyone that says the treatments that Dr. Campbell recommends do not work has not really done any research on UVBI or H202 treatments.

When all else fails, then try a UVBI & H202 treatment as stated by Dr. Campbell.
